Open Up
Series of 12
The Open Up in Purple, Blue, and White series is a set of 12 pieces that explores the possibilities of a single geometric pattern through variations in color and background. The pattern started out as a simple square with its center cut out to form a triangle. My initial exploration of these shapes reminded me of previous abstract geometric work, such as Cosmic Gemstones, leading me to develop the design further.
A key feature of the series is the way the shapes appear to grow and shrink in thickness and size across each piece. I found the pattern created by arranging the thickest shapes in the bottom left and the thinnest shapes in the top right particularly compelling.
I experimented extensively with color, creating around 30 different variations before settling on the final designs I liked that most. This ended up amounting to 12 unique pieces even though I was planning on making only two or three. A distinctive aspect of this series is the use of varied backgrounds—ranging from light to dark and incorporating blue, purple, white, or combinations thereof. This choice dramatically alters the perceived colors of the paper shapes, adding another layer of complexity and nuance to the work. This was the first time I created multiple versions of the same art piece, with the same pattern but different color placements. I still find it difficult to choose a favorite among the 12 pieces.
Immerse yourself in the Open Up in Purple, Blue, and White series to see the full range of geometric color variations and experience how a single geometric pattern can be transformed into a diverse collection of abstract artworks through subtle shifts in color and composition.
