Proud Peacock
Individual Piece
Proud Peacock is a striking piece that began as a study in varying paper thicknesses, with the initial concept focused on alternating thick and thin elements within the pattern to create a dynamic composition. The design process involved exploring different ways to repeat the shapes. I spent several months figuring out the best repetition, eventually discovering that focusing on the "Y" shape where two pieces of paper met, rather than the arch shape, formed a better placement of the design elements. This breakthrough allowed the underlying geometric structure to emerge.
The color placement for Proud Peacock also evolved over time. Early attempts at coloring the piece reminded me of a crochet blanket, which was not the intended aesthetic. Through a process of trial and error, I eventually returned to an early color placement idea I had, realizing it was the most effective in capturing the vibrancy I envisioned. The rich, jewel-toned colors in this specific placement enhance the intricate geometric patterns.
The final pattern and color arrangement evoke the "eyes" on a peacock's feather, albeit through a geometric lens. The title Proud Peacock reflects this visual association. Creating this piece was a healing process for me, as it was made shortly after the Palisades Fire in Southern California, which occurred very close to where I lived. The act of creation became a way for me to find beauty after destruction.
