Retro Repeats
Series of 2
The Retro Repeats duo is a pair of vibrant pieces inspired by the dynamic patterns of Googie architecture. I've always been fascinated by the fun and energetic patterns and repeats found in that style, and these pieces translate that energy into a contemporary abstract form. The design features bold shapes and a retro color palette.
These two pieces are inversions of each other: the negative space in one becomes the positive space in the other. I was intrigued by the idea of creating two artworks that are both independent and complementary, their shapes echoing and responding to each other. This design approach also allowed for a low-waste process, as the cut-out shapes from one piece found a home in the other.
The final forms of the pieces evoke different retro sensibilities. One piece, with its star-like central motif, has a distinct Googie feel, reminiscent of the bold, space-age designs of that era. The other piece, with its interlocking shapes, reminds me of the patchwork crochet blankets that were popular in the 1970s, adding a layer of cozy nostalgia to my geometric abstraction.
