Slithering Citrus
Individual Piece
Slithering Citrus is inspired by the concept of transformation and fluidity, and how creatures like chameleons and octopi adapt to their surroundings. This piece captures the effect of colors shifting and blending into one another, creating a sense of continuous movement and flow. It explores how colors can appear to change as they interact, much like the dynamic color changes seen in nature.
The shapes in Slithering Citrus, when viewed together, evoke the image of scales, which in turn inspired the idea of a snake slithering across a surface. The arrangement of these shapes creates a sense of undulating motion, further enhancing the "slithering" effect. In contrast to many of my other works, which often feature high contrast, Slithering Citrus employs a predominantly analogous color palette. This choice was deliberate, as I wanted to create a more subtle and harmonious color experience, focusing on the smooth transitions between hues.
Creating Slithering Citrus presented several unique challenges. Each individual shape incorporates a tiny piece of paper, which was difficult to cut out precisely. During the assembly process, one color stood out as being tonally different from the others, an effect that I now find adds a compelling element of surprise to the piece. Achieving the correct spacing between the shapes was also difficult, but ultimately rewarding, contributing to the overall sense of movement and rhythmic flow.
Experience the subtly dynamic Slithering Citrus to discover its smooth color transitions.
