Window Watching

Individual Piece

Teal orange yellow geometric art, abstract pattern, paper design.

Window Watching is inspired by my fascination with buildings, particularly skyscrapers. For years, I had wanted to create a piece that captured this inspiration, but it was only after some time and experimentation that the design for Window Watching finally came together. The strong lines and bold colors are reminiscent of modern architecture found in many cities.

The initial design didn't quite capture what I wanted, so I set it aside for a while. When I returned to it, I realized that flipping the design and playing with the way the paper pieces overlapped would create a much more interesting and dynamic composition. The overlapping geometric shapes create a sense of depth and complexity. I also found it satisfying that the four pieces of paper used in each individual pattern unit can be rearranged into a single parallelogram, which allowed me to use all the parts of each shape with minimal waste.

When I look at Window Watching, I see the windows of a building, but the overlapping design creates an optical illusion where it becomes difficult to discern the direction the windows are facing. This ambiguous perspective adds a layer of visual intrigue to the piece. The interplay of light and shadow on the overlapping paper adds to the dynamic nature of the artwork.

Venture into the city-inspired Window Watching and experience its dynamic composition and ambiguous perspectives.
